Malleable or Inflatable? Penile Prosthesis Types
There are two main types of penile prosthesis: malleable (bendable) and inflatable (penile pump). The right type is chosen individually.
There is no single 'best' model for a penile prosthesis; the most suitable type is determined by the person's expectations, dexterity and clinical situation. There are two main groups:
Malleable prosthesis
It consists of semi-rigid rods placed inside the penis whose position can be adjusted by hand. It is simple to use and contains no mechanical parts. It is positioned upward for intercourse and lowered afterwards.
Inflatable (penile pump) prosthesis
It consists of cylinders, a reservoir and a small pump. When inflated on demand it mimics a natural erection; when deflated it provides a more natural appearance. Multi-component systems stand out for balancing firmness and flexibility.
Which is right for you?
- Dexterity and expectation of ease of use
- Priority on a natural appearance when deflated
- Clinical situation and anatomical assessment
These criteria are evaluated together during the examination. The aim is to determine the most accurate and realistic option for you.
