Bladder Pacemaker — Sacral Neuromodulation
Treatment by nerve stimulation in overactive bladder and selected incontinence cases.
A bladder pacemaker (sacral neuromodulation) is a method that aims to reduce symptoms by stimulating the nerves controlling the bladder, in overactive bladder and selected incontinence cases that do not respond adequately to other treatments.
Sacral neuromodulation is a system that sends mild stimuli, via a thin electrode, to the nerves controlling the bladder. A trial period is usually applied first; a permanent system is placed in patients who benefit.
Who Is It For?
- Overactive bladder not responding to medical/behavioural treatment
- Selected urge-type incontinence cases
How Is It Performed?
The procedure may be in two stages: first a trial (test) period, then a permanent system if there is benefit. Suitability and the process are explained after assessment.
Recovery & Follow-up
Recovery varies by the stage applied; the system's settings can be adjusted at follow-up.
