Penile Curvature — Peyronie's & Congenital
Curvature that becomes apparent during erection; may be acquired (Peyronie's) or congenital.
Penile curvature becomes apparent during erection and can sometimes cause pain or difficulty with intercourse. There are acquired (Peyronie's) and congenital types.
Peyronie's disease is curvature, pain or shortening during erection caused by hard plaques forming in the penile sheath (tunica albuginea). Congenital curvature arises developmentally without plaque and is usually noticed in youth.
The degree of curvature, presence of pain and impact on intercourse determine treatment. Early assessment is important.
Symptoms
- Curvature that becomes apparent during erection
- A palpable hardness / plaque (in Peyronie's)
- Pain during erection (especially in the early/active phase)
- A sense of shortening of the penis
- Difficulty with penetration
Causes
- Repeated micro-trauma (Peyronie's)
- Wound healing / connective-tissue tendency
- Developmental causes (congenital curvature)
- Association with some connective-tissue diseases
When Should You Seek Help?
If the curvature is progressing, painful, or prevents intercourse, assessment is recommended. Medical approaches in the active (early) phase and surgical options in the stable phase may be considered, so timing matters.
