Penile Curvature: When Should You See a Doctor?
Penile curvature can be acquired (Peyronie's) or congenital. The phase and degree of curvature directly affect the treatment decision.
Penile curvature becomes apparent during erection and can sometimes cause pain or difficulty with intercourse. There are two main types: acquired Peyronie's disease and congenital curvature.
Timing matters in Peyronie's
In the early (active) phase of Peyronie's, pain and a changing picture may be seen; this phase is important for medical approaches. In the stable phase, surgical correction comes up for marked curvature preventing intercourse.
Congenital curvature
It arises developmentally without plaque and is usually noticed in youth. Surgical correction can be applied for marked curvature that makes intercourse difficult.
Signs to seek help
- Progression of the curvature
- Pain during erection
- Difficulty with penetration
- A palpable hardness/plaque
If any of these are present, assessment is recommended. Early help can broaden treatment options.
